Libretto 50M Information

The Libretto 50M, model name 'The Smile', is actually a modified version of the original Libretto 50 which was made specifically for a Japanese insurance company called Meiji Life who are situated in Tokyo. The Libretto 50M is special because it has a touch panel and pen interface mounted just in front of the lcd screen. Drivers for the touch panel are extremely hard to find, but it is possible ; )

Pen Drivers Installation Guide

If you purchased your Libretto 50m secondhand from a shop in akihabara in Japan, chances are you got a harddrive with it, but no software, not even an operating system. Apparently the reason for this is that, windows by default can't be sold without a license, so you'd basically be getting a free copy (which would certainly endanger microsofts $52 Billion enterprise).
Anyway this wasn't problem for me at first as i knew i could at least get an old licensed copy of windows 95. The trouble is, windows has to be put on there somehow. Now, I'm not going to explain how to do this, but. For one, it'd be handy to have a laptop-to-ide hard disk adaptor (about $NZ 20), in order to install windows to it from a desktop machine.
Once windows is installed, you'll have to set up the pen drivers, which also aren't available by default *sigh* and have to be specially supplied along with the pcs touch panel display. Now if you ain't got the install disks, your shit out of luck! Unless... A nice guy like Atsuo comes along and tells you where to get the drivers. (onya!)

These drivers are in zipped form containing both pen sevices for windows and the toshiba tablet drivers. First, Unzip all the files contained in the zip to a temporary directory e.g c:\toshpen, then go that directory, unzip all the files contained in the other zip file called pen.zip, to new directory under c:\toshpen called 'pen'. Sort of like, c:\toshpen\pen\ .

By now, i would hope that both zip files (one within another) have been unzipped to separate directories.
Next, go to the 'Add New Hardware' application under control panel. It will then want to search for plug & play devices, and later if none have been found, ask you 'Do you want windows to search for your new hardware?'. Click No, "Next >", select 'other devices' from the list, "Next >", then click on "Have Disk", now if you do not have a floppy drive, this may take a while for it to realise it's missing, and give you an input box. Heres where you enter the directory c:\toshpen\ and wait. It should move on to the next screen and list an item called 'Toshiba Tablet', go next, go figure. etc and it should have installed the toshiba tablet drivers. Viewable under '???' in device manager, the ??? is the japanese characters english windows can't understand.

Now all we need to do is install pen services.
First, you should notice that if you expand the device tree of '???' in device manager, there will be two 'Toshiba Tablet' entries, This is ok, and theres no need to remove one of them, as one is representing the device itself and the other, the tablet driver. Go to properties of Toshiba Tablet entry #2, and 'oh no!?' the device driver windows\system\vmm32\TVpend.vxd is missing or cannot be found. This is where the pen services come in. Escape from device manager and copy all the files under the nested directory 'c:\toshpen\pen\ to windows\system\vmm32 and reboot!. If you find that Device Manager is not finding those files then it may be a good idea to copy every single file in the zip to the windows\, windows\system\ and vmm32 directories. This is a very untidy way to do things but it may help a bit if Device Manager can't seem to find what you've told it to.
If the drivers have been found by Device Manager, look under Properties for the names of the ones its using and then remove the unused driver files from the other directories.

When windows appears, go to My Computer, and if the installation went correctly there will be a little 'A' icon next to the computer icon and before the 'My Computer' text. Touch the screen with the libretto pen, (or your fingernail? if you're cheap) and whala! the pen is a working!

Please Note: I no longer provide email support for those with libretto questions as sadly i do not own a libretto 50m anymore. However Xin's cool talk website or www.fixup.net may be of use. Thanks very much to all of you who have emailed me with questions and complements over the years.. There are a lot of good libretters out there!
